Current Position: Full Professor at Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, since 1990
Professional career in Industry: Part-time work in a large steel company (1200 employees) during 8 years (1972-74, 1978/85) in the Engineering Design Department and Welding and Quality Control Department.
Present Research Interests: New Product and service development and Innovation Management.Other Teaching and Research Interest : Fatigue of welded structures ; Lightweight structures for automotive industries Manufacturing of welded constructions;Integrity of structures and components (fracture,creep); Life cycle cost analysis
Management Activities:Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management, Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto ( 115 FTE Members of teaching staff , 1200 undergraduate and post graduate students) ;Chairman or Vice-Chairman of IDMEC – R & D non profit private Research Institute, with more than 250 researchers (160 with PhD degree) from 1990 till February 2011.
Project Management:Management of an Investment project of creation of IDMEC R & D Laboratory infrastructures, funded by the Science and Technology Foundation ( with support from the structural funds of European Commission ) with a total budget of 5 million Euros (period 1990-1995);Project leader of Comett Project – Contract nº 87/1/D/00383;Project EUREKA EU 2669;Project Manager of BRITE/EURAM Consortium – Contract no BREU-CT91-0550 ( 1991-1994Total budget 1.75 Million Euros);Coordinator of Portuguese Participation in European Project EUROLIFEFORM –Contract Nº G1RD –CT -2001 – 00497 (2001-2004 Portuguese budget 440 000 euros ) ;Project Manager of European project LITEBUS consortium , October 2006-October 2009 ( total budget 3.7 million euros; EU grant of 2 million euros ); ;Coordinator of Portuguese Participation in European Project HCV-Hybrid Commercial vehicle (2010-2013 , Grant nº 234019- 250 000 euros);Project Manager of european project ULCF consortium – Ultra Low cycle fatigue of steel under cyclic high strain loading conditions ( grant : 244 000 euros);Coordinator of Portuguese Participation in European Project ENLIGHT - Enhanced lightweight design ( 2012-2016 -Grant 262 000 euros ) ;Co-coordinator of Portuguese participation in european project FADLESS - Fatigue damage control and assessment for road and railway bridges (2009-2012, grant : 60 000 euros );Co-coordinator of Portuguese participation Marie Curie ITN VECOM - Vehicle Concept Modeling, Programa Marie Curie Initial Training Networks (FP7-PEOPLE-2007-1-1-ITN) ( grant : 200 000 euros ;
