Mr Manel Sanmartí, Manager of the Electrical Engineering Research Area (EERA) at the Catalonia Energy Research Institute (IREC), has a large experience leading and participating in international and national R&D projects in the field of energy systems and scientific facilities. His energy engineering background has been completed with a Master of Technology Enterprise and Project Management. He has more than 15 years’ experience in large international scientific projects like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC-CERN) and the ITER project (ITER-F4E) where he has been Spanish national seconded expert (2006-2009). He has also been cofounder and Director of the consultancy and engineering SME, ISUNO Energy. Since 2011 he is leading the Electrical Engineering Research Area at IREC with the objective of consolidating and expanding research activities in the fields of electro mobility, smart grids, renewable energies and energy efficiency in systems and communities. He has been has been participating and leading several projects like GreeneMotion (electromobility, FP7), Advanced Wind Energy Engineering (wind energy, industrial), and Growsmarter (Smart Cities, H2020 SCC1) among other national and European projects. He is part of the Smart Cities Joint Programme of the European Energy Research Alliance and co-Operating Agent of the V2X Task 28 of the Hybird and Electrical Vehicle Technology Program of the IEA. He is also leading the RIS3CAT Energy Community, a 15 MiEuro Action Plan to develop and improve the competitiveness of the energy sector in Catalonia.
